The watch features a solid caseback with the Seahorse medallion and the words 'The First Omega In Space' and 'October 3, 1962.' So, who is the Sedna Gold FOIS for? In 1965, the first Omega Speedmaster was certified by NASA for manned space missions, and issued to astronauts thereafter, later to be named the Omega Speedmaster Professional around 1966 [1].
In 1962, the Speedmaster Ref. CK 2998 (1959) was worn as the personal wristwatch of Astronaut Walter Schirra during his Sigma 7 NASA mission (part of the Mercury program) where Schirra orbited Earth six times and earned the first Omega in space moniker. The new model shares a lot of them, including the straight lugs and combination of alpha hands and baton hands on the subdials – which as he pointed out in his story are actually correct for the reference that astronaut Wally Schirra wore into space on Mercury Atlas 8 in 1962. It could have been an out of the park home run if they'd corrected the short comings of the FOIS 2012: hesalite crystal instead of sapphire crystal (like 2998s), baton white 9 o'clock subdial hand (like later 2998s), and 1/5th sub second marks instead of 1/3 sub second marks on the dial.
